Japan's 10% consumption tax can be waived for short-term visitors, but the rules are not obvious. Here's what applies to beauty.
Salon services — generally NOT tax-free
Haircuts, color, and head spa are consumption services performed in Japan — by default they are not tax-exempt. A handful of premium salons absorb the tax for international guests as a courtesy.
Take-home products — yes, with conditions
Shampoo, conditioner, and styling products purchased to take home qualify for tax exemption, provided you spend over ¥5,000 at a single tax-free-licensed location and show your passport.
Look for the "Japan. Tax-free Shop" sticker at the reception. Salons without this license cannot process tax-free purchases.
Frequently asked
Can I claim tax back at the airport for salon services?
No — services consumed in Japan are not refundable at customs. Only physical goods qualify.
